The past several years, the rate of cigarette smoking has been shifting away from cigarettes, which are on the decline, to the rise of e-cigarettes. Nicotine is present in both, but in varying levels, depending on what a person smokes. Some studies indicate e-cigarettes are a safer alternative, while others raise serious doubts. It is difficult to know who is right but the possible consequences can be life-altering for those who become addicted to either form of smoking.

What Are E-Cigs

E-cigarettes are sometimes referred to as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) or vaporizers. These e-cigarettes do not produce ‘smoke’ in the same way traditional cigarettes do from burning tobacco. E-cigarettes contain no tobacco but instead have replaceable cartridges of liquid that most often contain nicotine and come in a variety of flavors (including chocolate and candy, which appeal to youth). The e-cigarette will have a small battery that converts the liquid in the cartridge into water-based mist, which is expelled as a vapor before it is inhaled. Weaning off traditional cigarettes is difficult, but some say e-cigarettes make this transition easier. Others mention that there are still toxic chemicals present in these e-cigarettes and people who are looking for smoking cessation options may want to look elsewhere.

Rise of E-Cigarettes

E-cigarette use has surpassed traditional cigarette use among middle-and high school students. A recent CDC study shows the number of high school students using e-cigarettes has tripled in the past year. Youths are almost twice as likely to switch to traditional cigarettes at some point over those who never used. The industry itself has seen explosive growth in the billions of dollars the past several years. Nicotine, any way it is smoked, can damage the lungs, especially in young people, and create dependence or addiction which may lead to respiratory issues later like asthma or bronchitis.

Easy Access

Even t hough states are looking to ban e-cigarettes, it has not deterred young people or others from purchasing them and smoking. There are few verification processes online if people want to purchase tobacco through the internet where age restrictions should exist. There are friends who will sell to other friends and, of course, adults can buy anywhere they are sold. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance known to be harmful to people, especially at a young age. All ages should be concerned with the toxic substances present in e-cigarettes and reconsider purchasing them, instead seeking alternative smoking cessation programs that help kick the habit for good.
