Finding ways to stay in a peace of calm and tranquility can be challenging when life is throwing things your way left and right. Life is a series of ups and downs. There are no guarantees and, quite often, we feel entitled to the ‘easier path,’ rather than learning how to lean into the harder times by changing our mindset in the midst of chaos. These tips may just help you maintain a sense of zen when life is trying its best to make you feel otherwise.

Close Your Eyes

Anytime, anywhere, anyplace, you can simply pull the blinds closed and turn your focus inward. When you do this, it can feel like a beautiful peace in an otherwise chaotic world. It helps to work on your own inner world, to keep the focus on cultivating peace within, so you can have peace without.

Take Deep Breaths

Finding your breath is important in keeping zen. Noticing these moments in your day can help you breathe easier. Start by pulling a breathe inside your nose on the inhale, fill your belly from the bottom to the top, say a mantra like ‘breathe,’ then exhale slowly. This practice works anytime there is anxiety, fear, worry, or chaos swirling around.

Do Something Silly

Zen is what happens when we finally relax and embrace happiness. As we age, it seems like we laugh less easily, and less often. It can help to do fun things like skipping instead of walking and learning how to smile to flip your day around, rather than frown or get worried about the little things.

Walk or Bike

Going outside and doing a simple activity like walking or biking can help get rid of anxiety and stress. Doing a bit of exercise is not only good for the heart, but also for the mind and body. It helps bring a sense of calm in a world that is full of chaos.

Choose Zen

Holding onto anything in the mind, body, or spirit can take you away from being present and open. Practice letting go in small ways by choosing zen. Every action is first a thought and has an intention behind it. When you set a clear and positive intention to ‘find a zen place’ everyday, you are more likely to find what you are looking for (in a good way).
